This year we accepted donations from registrants to help offset the expenses of putting on the drive and ended with a small surplus for next year. Thanks to all who donated!
Special thanks to supporting donations ($100 or more) from:
$100 - i1Tesla
$150 - Margaret Ackiss
(more names to add after permission is gained to add them)
Participants will gather in the large parking lot at the Asheville Supercharger beginning in the morning. We have permits and permission from property owners. Registration will occur in the parking lot starting in the morning and there are a number of food options within walking distance of the supercharger for lunch. This year we plan to livestream the gathering and the beginning of the drive (until cell signal cuts out on the parkway).
Before the drive begins we will also be collecting non-perishable food for a Fill-up-the-Frunk drive, which was suggested and organized by a member of Pittsburgh Tesla Owners. Loving Food Resources helps 18 counties in Western North Carolina and will be on hand to collect the donations. 8,308 clients received food boxes last year from LFR. Below is a list of most needed items, but any non glass, non perishable items are appreciated. Cereal, canned meats: chicken, tuna etc, cooking oils, hearty & chunky soups, canned beans & fruit, quick & easy meal kits, pastas.
The drive will originate at the Asheville Supercharger and take us southwest down the Blue Ridge Parkway. We will travel 78 miles on the parkway through hairpin curves, steep grades, and many tunnels, climbing to an altitude above 6000 feet at one point. After reaching the end of the parkway, the direct trip back to the supercharger is 52 miles, making the entire loop 130 miles. All Teslas should be able to make this drive. After exiting the Blue Ridge Parkway at the 78 mile mark, the permitted drive is complete and you may return directly to Asheville or choose your own adventure before returning. Many will return directly but for those with additional battery capacity that you're itching to fully utilize, there will be options to do so. Some small groups may be organized for a little additional driving before returning and of course you may break out on your own.
The 130 mile loop
Saturday night will be a group social and dinner event in the ballroom of the Asheville Crowne Plaza. To attend the evening event, there is a $45 per person charge to cover the event space, dinner buffet, service fees, and taxes. Children 10 to 4 are $22 and children 3 and under are free. Participation in the evening event is optional but we hope to see many of you there. Tickets to the evening event may be purchased during registration. Ticket price will be increased to $50 for adults with the same price of $22 for children after September 17th due to a higher fee for last minute additions charged by the venue and space may be limited. The dinner buffet will include the following:
- Mixed Green Salad
- Freshly Baked Rolls
- Blackened Cod Filet
- Herb-Marinated Chicken
- Macaroni & Cheese
- Deep Dish Fruit Cobbler
- Southern Pecan Pie
Beverages included with the buffet are freshly brewed coffee, decaf coffee, iced tea, and water. There will also be a bar to purchase sodas and alcoholic beverages. Except for the bread and macaroni & cheese, the buffet is gluten free. There is also the option to request a vegan plate, but that must be done in advance.
For those staying in Asheville, we highly recommend booking your hotel stay soon. While there are lots of hotel options in Asheville, they tend to fill up over weekends heading into and through Autumn.
While the official 2019 Blue Ridge Parkway Tesla Drive event ends when the ballroom doors close Saturday night, that doesn't mean the adventure has to end. For those that want to, you're welcome to setup small group options among yourselves for Sunday. The Facebook group below would be a good place for discussion and organization of Sunday small group options. Any additional organized driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway would need to be limited to groups of 20 cars or less to be in compliance with use of the parkway without a permit.
Small group options are not organized or hosted by Tesla Owners Club of NC Triangle, Inc.
With the drive originating from the Asheville supercharger and returning back to Asheville, charging should not be an issue if managed correctly. In addition to the supercharger we will be providing CHAdeMO adapters and session activation for two EVgo 50kw DC charging stations near the supercharger as soon as all spots are full on the supercharger Saturday.
General rule is to charge up as soon as you get to Asheville to allow space for those arriving after you. For those coming in Friday, be sure to charge up to 90% Friday night at the Asheville Supercharger. For those coming in Saturday, we will be suggesting charging strategy to ensure all cars have enough charge to make the loop. After the drive, we will suggest that anyone staying in Asheville Saturday night delay charging to give priority to those traveling home Saturday. You will make your own decisions when it comes to use of the supercharger. We can only make suggestions. If there are still cars needing charge when the drive begins, we will have a second group to allow remaining cars time to charge.
